Introduction

Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) is a “semi-conductor based ‘light switch’ array of thousands of individually addressable, tiltable, mirror pixels”. DLP, commercialized DMD is a display solution that uses an optical semiconductor to manipulate light digitally.

DMD has been successful as a spatial light modulator, which consists of an array of pixels where each pixel acts independently to adjust or modulate light intensity. This success has made DMD technology the selected choice for many new applications, to name a few.

Ø      Volumetric display: displaying images in three-dimensional volumes

Ø      Holographic data storage: utilizing light and the volume of medium surface to store data.

Ø      Lithography: printing on smooth surfaces

Ø      Medical imaging: imaging of body organs

DLP technology has revolutionized the digital display market with applications in:

Ø      Projectors

Ø      Projection Televisions

o       HDTV

Ø      Cinema

This paper will explore the history of DMD/DLP technology as well as the development of its current commercialized version namely DLP. In addition, the paper will discuss both technologies, their current and future applications, components and tools, along with technological alternatives and future expectations.
