Tape Backup
Tape backup is the ability to periodically copy the contents of all or a part of your data from its primary storage device (hard disk) to a tape cartridge device. Data can be stored and archived against the possibility of a hard disk crash or comparable failure. In case of a failure, data will not be lost. Tape is the most economical way to protect one of your company's most valuable assets: your corporate data. It is the most cost-effective, easy, and affordable way to insure your data is protected.
Automated
Backup
Tape automation
devices are used to automate backup processes to improve utilization,
manageability, and reliability. Tape automation devices hold multiple magnetic
tape media cartridges that are automatically loaded into tape drives. Automated
tape products are powered by SCSI controllers found embedded on your PowerEdge
motherboard, or through an add-in PCI SCSI controller card. The capacity and
speed of your backup will depend on the size of your tape automation product
selection.
Tape Drive
A tape drive is an essential device used to back up data
to magnetic tape. Tape media can be used for frequent server backups, and
archived offsite for disaster protection. Tape drives are powered by SCSI or IDE
controllers found embedded on your PowerEdge motherboard, or through an add-in
PCI SCSI controller card. The capacity and speed of your backup will depend on
the tape drive selection.
Tape Backup Software
Dell Tape Backup Software is a tiered suite of software products offering comprehensive backup, restore and recovery capabilities for data residing on one or more servers. The software products that comprise each suite leverage commercially available data protection products from third- party software vendors, but each suite is optimized for use with Dell server and storage systems. As such, these are fully tested, qualified, and certified to work with all Dell server and tape backup products available at the time of release of the latest version of Dell Tape Backup Software. Dell offers first line of defense technical support for Dell Tape Backup software for use with Dell servers and storage area networks.
Dell Tape Backup Software is comprised of three editions to align the best solution with the needs of the customer.
Tape Backup Software
The software is arranged into core suites and add-on packs that enhance base suite functionality.
Core Suites
Yosemite Tapeware Single Server Suite: Enables backup of a single server with an IDE tape drive. The Server Suite is built the for Small Office, Home Office (SOHO) or workgroups. Ideally suited for a customer who requires high availability and a quick and easy restore/recovery process in the event of failure.
CA Arcserve & Veritas Backup Exec Server Suite:Enables backup of single server. The Server Suite is built the for Small Office, Home Office (SOHO) or workgroups. Ideally suited for a customer who requires high availability and a quick and easy restore/recovery process in the event of failure.
CA Arcserve & Veritas Backup Exec Server Pro Suite: Enables multi-server LAN backup with applicable Remote Server Pack. The Server Pro Suite is built for medium to large enterprises. Ideally suited for a customer who requires high availability and a quick and easy restore/recovery process in the event of failure, needs increased backup performance and has or is planning to install a multi-drive tape library.
CA Arcserve & Veritas Backup Exec SAN Suite: Enables backup of servers connected to SAN to shared tape autoloaders and libraries. Also enables multi-server LAN backup with applicable Remote Server Pack. The SAN Suite is built for medium to large enterprises. Ideally suited for a customer who is or is planning to install a Storage Area Network (SAN) and has or is planning to install a multi-drive tape library to backup multiple servers.
There are also two add-on packs-Remote Server Pack and Online Backup Pack-that enhance base suite functionality.
Add-on Packs
Remote Server Pack: Enables additional servers to be backed up in a multi-server LAN environment. The Remote Server Pack is recommended for users that need to backup remote servers to help optimize backup performance and enable cross-platform backup to a primary master server. VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT/W2K and CA ARCserve 2000 for Windows NT/W2K require one agent for each additional remote server not supported in base package. VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare, CA ARCserve for NetWare, and ARCserve for Linux do not require a Remote Server Pack.
Online Backup Pack: Provides transparent backup of open files, database, e-mail and groupware applications. The Online Backup Pack is ideal for customers running Exchange, SQL, Oracle or Notes/Domino databases and need uninterrupted protection 24-hours a day.
